UHMWPE Wear by Plastic Deformation in Hip Endoprosthesis

چکیده
The UHMWPE has a plastic behaviour but it is specified only the surface wear, unless the evaluation of the great importance of this behaviour of plasticity for the calculation of the depth of penetration. This work tries to demonstrate the fact that there are components of the wear by plastic deformation. Also, by this type of wear an explanation of smooth surface of the UHMWPE in the contact zone, after millions of gaits cycles may be explained

Variation of Friction Factor Through the Gait Cycle in an UHMWPE-CoCrMo Hip Endoprosthesis
* email: [email protected] John Charnley was the first who introduced low friction arthroplasty concept. In November 1962, he implanted a hip prosthesis using a high density polyethylene (HDPE) cup, which articulated with a stainless steel femoral head of 22,25 mm diameter. The principle of the low friction arthroplasty has remained the same ever since. Because HDPE have not a goo...

After the gamma-irradiation sterilization, the most widely used orthopaedic grade polymer bearing liner material for the total joint replacement, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), degrades through the progressive in vivo oxidation. The oxidative degradation makes UHMWPE brittle and leads to reduction of its mechanical properties. In this study, the effect of the in vivo post-ir...
متن کاملWear of Crosslinked Uhmwpe in a Hip Joint Simulator
Crosslinking has been extensively introduced to reduce the wear of UHMWPE. In this study the wear rates and wear surfaces of UHMWPE with different levels of crosslinking were compared in a hip joint simulator. The UHMWPE was either non-irradiated, gamma irradiated in air (2.5MRad), or highly crosslinked (7.5 and 10MRad). The intentionally crosslinked materials showed a significantly lower volum...
متن کاملFailure of a metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty from progressive osteolysis.
Ultra-high-molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) wear, debris-induced osteolysis is a frequent cause of failure of total hip arthroplasty. Metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty eliminates the generation of UHMWPE particulate debris. Although the volumetric wear of a metal-on-metal articulation may be lower than a metal-UHMWPE articulation, the number of particles may be higher. Osteolysis can ...
